As big a part of my life as the IT world is, it’s not the only thing I think about. I also happen to be an avid fitness enthusiast! I believe exercise and wellness are big parts of leading a happy, healthy and successful life, and I’d like to pass that on to you.

In this series, I’ll share simple and effective tips and insight for leading a healthier life. Keep these in mind and you’ll be surprised by how soon you feel a difference!

This week I’ll be talking about the importance of staying hydrated.

WAIT! I know what you’re thinking…

“People have been telling me to make sure I drink lots of water since I was a kid.”

 And you’re right – but that’s kind of the point. As much as we are told to drink plenty of water every day, most of us fall short. Why? One of the main reasons is that when we’re thirsty, water is just one of a handful of options available to us, and one of the least marketed.

Energy drinks, soda, milk, coffee, tea, beer, etc. The list of potential thirst quenchers goes on and on, but none of them are the ideal way to keep a body hydrated. Whether it’s sugar, coffee or alcohol or otherwise, they all serve to dehydrate you. That’s why coffee and juice in the morning (or plenty of alcohol the night before) will usually lead to a headache.

Drinking plenty of water throughout the day can help you avoid:

  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Indigestion
  • Cramps and strains

And even more!

But enough about the bad stuff. Drinking water isn’t just about avoiding dehydration – there are plenty of upsides as well. So what are the benefits of drinking enough water every day?

  • Increases in energy levels
  • Promotion of weight loss
  • Improved skin complexion
  • Healthy digestion
  • Improved quality of hair
  • Better heat management (a key to daily survival down here in the south!)
  • And much more!

That’s all well and good, but in the end, actions speak louder than words. You may know that you should be drinking more water, but if you’ve got a busy schedule, it’ll be easy to forget about until you’re hit with that mid-day headache. Here are some tips to help you drink more water:

  • Pair your other drinks with a cup of water – have one with your morning coffee and breakfast, or alternate with your order of choice at the bar in the evening.
  • Get a good water bottle that you won’t forget somewhere. They come in all shapes and sizes and can be designed to keep your water cool long after you fill up.
  • Have a glass every time you’re returning from the bathroom.
  • Don’t just chat at the watercooler – actually make use of it!
  • Set a simple goal for post-work out hydration, such as finishing a whole water bottle before you move on to Gatorade or something similar.

Remember, more than anything else, our bodies are made of water. We rely on hydration to perform nearly every minor and major biological function, so don’t let your supply run low!
