This year’s TCS New York City Marathon took place on Sunday, November 6th. With a course weaving its way through all five boroughs and boasting over 50,000 finishers, the NYC Marathon has the distinction of being the largest in the world.
LAN Masters President Mike Della Pia completed the marathon, running to raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and beating his initial fundraising goal of $3,500 to reach a total of $4,100.
The St. Jude Heroes program allows runners to raise funds while training for a race. All of the money raised by St. Jude Heroes will go directly toward making sure that families who are facing the awful reality of serious childhood illness never have to pay for treatment, travel, housing or food. “I believe in the work they do there, and seeing how they operate mainly on donations, I like to help out when I can,” says Mike, who has now run several races as a St. Jude Hero.
Far from being his first race, this year’s NYC Marathon was Mike’s 13th full marathon. As a group leader for a marathon training program, he trains year round for events like this, starting every single day at 3am to get his miles in before heading to the office.
St. Jude is still a little shy of their $550,000 fundraising goal for this event. If you’d like to help them reach that goal, you can make a donation here.
